Unidentified Tibetan painters. Milarepa lived in Tibet around the eleventh and twelfth centuries and became renowned as a Buddhist teacher, poet and singer.

Funerary Papyrus of Tayuhenutmut

Unidentified Egyptian painters. This papyrus was prepared for a temple singer named Tayuhenutmut, whose name means “mistress of Mut” and refers to the Egyptian goddess.

Attributed to Hirschfeld Workshop. This vessel, more than a metre tall, served as a grave marker.

Pavel Fedotov. A visitor is entering, and the young host rushes to hide his breakfast. He wears an elaborate dressing gown and owns expensive things, yet his meal is rye bread.

Diego Velázquez. Velázquez painted Infanta Margarita and her attendants in 1656, including himself beside a large canvas.

Annunciation at San Marco

Fra Angelico. Gabriel tells Mary that she will become the mother of Christ. Fra Angelico painted their meeting on a wall of the residential floor of San Marco in Florence.

Lozenge Composition

Piet Mondrian. In 1921 Mondrian set a square canvas on a corner while keeping its internal lines horizontal and vertical. The rectangular grid meets sloping edges.

Summer’s Day

Berthe Morisot. Berthe Morisot painted these two women in a boat around 1879. They are visiting the Bois de Boulogne on the western edge of Paris.

The Herring Net

Winslow Homer. In 1881 Winslow Homer worked in the fishing community of Tynemouth on the English coast. The experience changed his painting for years to come.

Group Pilgrimage to the Jizo Nun

Ike Taiga. Ike Taiga depicts visitors arriving to see the Jizo nun. She was believed able to communicate with the bodhisattva Jizo, who could assist beings in the afterlife.

Pillars of the Country

Yao Shou. A magpie, branch, bamboo and poem fill this small section. The title of the complete scroll, Pillars of the Country, initially seems distant from the subject.

Unidentified Korean painters. A flock of geese descends over a broad river. This small motif identifies one of the Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers.

The Assumption of the Virgin

El Greco. El Greco painted The Assumption of the Virgin in 1577–79 for Santo Domingo el Antiguo in Toledo. It formed the centre of his first major Spanish commission.
