Unidentified Chinese painters. A family's move becomes a procession of practical difficulties.

Unidentified Korean painters. Kshitigarbha, known in Korean as Jijang Bosal, occupies the centre of this assembly.

Attributed to Ghasi. Maharana Bhim Singh rides through Mewar surrounded by a large entourage.

Ali Quli Jabbadar. Below, men struggle to manage a herd of horses; above, the ruler sits with courtiers and refreshments. Ali Quli Jabbadar combines these activities on one page.

Unidentified Tibetan painters. Milarepa lived in Tibet around the eleventh and twelfth centuries and became renowned as a Buddhist teacher, poet and singer.

Unidentified Nepali painters. This Nepalese banner was made to be raised above a festival crowd rather than remain still on a museum wall. Both sides are painted.

Unidentified Ethiopian painter. Christianity has been practised in Ethiopia since the fourth century.

Unidentified Egyptian painters. This papyrus was prepared for a temple singer named Tayuhenutmut, whose name means “mistress of Mut” and refers to the Egyptian goddess.

Gustav Klimt. Mäda stands full length before us, her feet apart and one elbow extended. She is about nine.

Unidentified Mughal painter. An entire mountain hangs above the crowd. Krishna supports it with one raised hand, sheltering the people of Braj from a downpour sent by the god Indra.

Unidentified Ottoman calligrapher and illuminator. This design was an emblem of state authority. Tughras appeared on sultanic decrees, letters, endowment documents, and coins.

Unidentified painter, probably Syria or Iraq. An elephant carries a tower with people, a bird, and dragons. This illustrates a clock from the engineer al-Jazari’s treatise.

Attributed to Hirschfeld Workshop. This vessel, more than a metre tall, served as a grave marker.

Edvard Munch. Munch connected this scene with a walk above the fjord at Kristiania, now Oslo.

Pavel Fedotov. A visitor is entering, and the young host rushes to hide his breakfast. He wears an elaborate dressing gown and owns expensive things, yet his meal is rye bread.

Diego Velázquez. Velázquez painted Infanta Margarita and her attendants in 1656, including himself beside a large canvas.

Fra Angelico. Gabriel tells Mary that she will become the mother of Christ. Fra Angelico painted their meeting on a wall of the residential floor of San Marco in Florence.

Joseph Mallord William Turner. Fishermen and buyers meet on rough water. A small boat carrying dealers approaches the larger vessel to purchase a catch for resale in port.

Piet Mondrian. In 1921 Mondrian set a square canvas on a corner while keeping its internal lines horizontal and vertical. The rectangular grid meets sloping edges.

Berthe Morisot. Berthe Morisot painted these two women in a boat around 1879. They are visiting the Bois de Boulogne on the western edge of Paris.

Carl Blechen. A palm house designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel was built on the Pfaueninsel near Potsdam to display the Prussian royal collection of tropical plants.

Winslow Homer. In 1881 Winslow Homer worked in the fishing community of Tynemouth on the English coast. The experience changed his painting for years to come.

Nicolás Enríquez. Nicolás Enríquez repeated the venerated image of the Virgin of Guadalupe at the centre and placed an account of its origin in the corners.

Ike Taiga. Ike Taiga depicts visitors arriving to see the Jizo nun. She was believed able to communicate with the bodhisattva Jizo, who could assist beings in the afterlife.

Yao Shou. A magpie, branch, bamboo and poem fill this small section. The title of the complete scroll, Pillars of the Country, initially seems distant from the subject.

Unidentified Korean painters. A flock of geese descends over a broad river. This small motif identifies one of the Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers.

Designed by Basawan, painted by Shankar. Thirteen-year-old Akbar has just taken the throne.

Unidentified Iranian painters. In Nizami's poem, King Anushirwan and his adviser become separated from a hunt and enter a ruined settlement. Hearing owls, the king asks what they are saying.

Unidentified Tibetan painters. This fourteenth-century Tibetan thangka was dedicated to Bhaishajyaguru, the Medicine Buddha.

Unidentified Newari painter. In autumn 1513 a Newar patron dedicated a major rite to the welfare of his wives, children and grandchildren.

Unidentified Egyptian painters. This painting was seen overhead. The ceiling fragment was found in a room beside Amenhotep III’s bedchamber at the palace of Malqata, on the Nile’s west bank…

Master of Heiligenkreuz. The apostles gather around the bed of the dead Virgin. Peter reads prayers and performs funerary rites.

Attributed to Exekias. The amphora’s decoration covers its rounded body, narrow neck, shoulder, and lid.

Nikolai Ge. Peter turns towards his son, who stands before him with his eyes lowered. Ge painted this encounter in 1871, on the eve of the tsar’s bicentenary.

El Greco. El Greco painted The Assumption of the Virgin in 1577–79 for Santo Domingo el Antiguo in Toledo. It formed the centre of his first major Spanish commission.

Sandro Botticelli. Prosperous Florentines surround the infant Christ. Among them are members of the Medici family and the patron, Gaspare del Lama.
