Gifford presents Kaaterskill Clove and its distant falls in soft light. His view differs from earlier, more threatening treatments of the gorge. Expanding tourist infrastructure is largely omitted. Selection makes the landscape appear more secluded than its changing surroundings.

Slender golden trees cling to the left cliff. Their small forms establish the rock’s height.

A dark ledge projects above the gorge. Nearby rock establishes the position from which the view opens.

A deep wooded valley descends through the centre. Space opens through successively lighter tones.

Distant ridges recede into luminous haze. Atmospheric light softens the mountain forms.

Golden treetops cover the right slope. Warm vegetation sustains the broad gorge’s quiet appearance.

Gifford grew up in the Hudson Valley and regularly sketched nearby mountains. Familiarity allowed him to select what to show. Omitted tourist structures form a significant part of that decision.
