Garden of the Inept Administrator — Wen Zhengming
Gift of Douglas Dillon, 1979 · The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Wen Zhengming had a studio in Wang Xianchen’s Suzhou garden and painted this eight-view album at eighty-one. Poetry, calligraphy and painting unite the Three Perfections. Centuries of rebuilding make it difficult to identify every view in the garden today.

An open pavilion contains several seated people. The garden appears as a setting for conversation, reading and artistic work.

Slender bamboo grows densely on the left. Different brush movements distinguish numerous stems and leaves.

A small figure stands in the open courtyard. It establishes the garden architecture’s scale.

A long terrace descends diagonally. A constructed route connects separate places within the garden.

A roofed entrance appears at the lower left. Architectural passages establish the visitor’s sequence of movement.

A red seal occupies the lower right. Writing and seals accompany the image as parts of the cultural object.

For Wen Zhengming this was a familiar working garden. The album joins personal experience with poetry and calligraphy. Changes over subsequent centuries make the paintings independent historical sources.
