Zhao Mengfu

1254–1322

Zhao Mengfu, a descendant of the Song imperial family, was a calligrapher, painter and connoisseur. In 1286 Kublai Khan recruited him for service in Dadu. Employment at the Mongol court placed him in a complicated position. Studying earlier masters became central to his painting and his understanding of cultivated learning.
