Painted by Chitarman

Chitarman worked at Shah Jahan's court. His earliest dated painting is a portrait of the ruler from 1627–28, soon after his accession. Such commissions combined likeness with signs of imperial rank. This artist should be distinguished from Chitarman II, an eighteenth-century painter who used the same name.
