Dong Qichang

1555–1636

Dong Qichang was a painter, theorist and collector. He regarded the study of earlier masters as a foundation for renewing painting. His landscapes examine the structure of old compositions and transform them through brushwork. His collection included Dong Yuan's Xiao and Xiang Rivers, an important model of southern Chinese landscape.
