Unidentified painter, probably Syria or Iraq

The illustrator of al-Jazari’s book is unidentified. The manuscript is dated 1315; the Met places its origin in probably Syria or Iraq. The treatise’s author described the elephant-clock mechanism and the calligrapher copied the text. The illustration helps explain the position of its components and the movements of its figures.
