Thomas Hovenden

Orphaned during the Irish famine, Hovenden trained in carving, gilding and drawing in Cork. He immigrated to the United States at twenty-three and supported himself by coloring photographs and making frames. William Walters helped him study in Paris; domestic genre scenes later brought recognition.
