Mosaicists of San Vitale

The mosaicists of San Vitale in Ravenna are unidentified. The basilica was consecrated in 547. Justinian and his attendants linked the church interior with imperial authority, although the emperor never visited the city. Mosaic production involved drawing, selecting coloured pieces and setting them into the wall.
