Ralph Earl

A Loyalist, Earl went to England in 1778, trained with Benjamin West and exhibited at the Royal Academy. After returning to America, he was confined in debtors' prison in 1786–1788. Portrait commissions helped repay debts and establish a practice among Connecticut's country gentry.
