Vasily Polenov

Polenov studied both art and law. In 1871 he graduated from the Academy of Arts with a major gold medal. He exhibited A Moscow Courtyard in 1878 and joined the Association of Travelling Art Exhibitions.

In Grandmother’s Garden, the figures occupy a small part of the canvas. The old house, path and trees receive equal attention. An ordinary walk connects the landscape with the lives of the estate’s inhabitants.
