Arkhip Kuindzhi
c. 1842–1910

Kuindzhi was born in Mariupol. Sources disagree about his birth year, so it is given approximately. He joined the Peredvizhniki in 1875 and held a single-painting exhibition of Moonlit Night on the Dnieper in 1880.
Illumination can become the main event in his landscapes. In After the Rain, bright grass and houses stand beside a stormy sky. The contrast between broad areas of colour shapes the whole painting.
