Katsushika Hokusai

As a teenager, Hokusai trained to cut woodblocks before studying with the artist Katsukawa Shunsho. He worked in both printmaking and painting and used more than thirty names, including Shunro, Sori, Iitsu and Manji. These signatures help trace stages of his long career and changing artistic interests.
