Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres
1780–1867
Ingres studied with Jacques-Louis David and won a Rome scholarship in 1801, taking it up in 1806. Raphael and other Italian masters strongly influenced him. He considered history painting his highest aim and also became an accomplished violinist.
