Henry Ossawa Tanner
1859–1937

Tanner's father was a prominent minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. After studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the artist moved to France in 1891 to escape racist barriers to his career in the United States.
