Courbet trained in Besançon and studied Dutch and Venetian painting in the Louvre. The jury of the 1855 Exposition Universelle accepted some of his works but rejected The Painter’s Studio. Nearby, Courbet opened his own Pavilion of Realism. He was imprisoned for his involvement in the Paris Commune and spent his final years in exile in Switzerland.
