Edward Hicks

Raised as a Quaker, Hicks apprenticed to a coachmaker and painted coaches and signs. He became an unpaid itinerant minister in 1811. Attempts to abandon commercial decoration failed because farming could not support his family, so craft continued alongside ministry.
