Chen Hongshou
1598/99–1652

Chen Hongshou gave his figures a deliberately archaic appearance, using even, controlled outlines and strong mineral colours. For his aunt's sixtieth birthday he painted Lady Xuanwen teaching the Rites of Zhou. A historical subject became a personal gift and an expression of respect for a learned woman.
